On Saturday, Trump took to Truth Social, asserting that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was engaged in negotiations with Hamas "right now." This statement comes amid intensified military operations by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), as confirmed by spokesperson Avichay Adraee, who stated on Sunday that the IDF was actively targeting terrorist elements and infrastructure in northern Gaza.

The situation on the ground is dire. Medics and residents, in conversations with Reuters, reported an uptick in military bombardments early Sunday, which resulted in the obliteration of several homes. The Hamas-run civil defense agency in Gaza reported that at least 23 individuals lost their lives on Sunday alone. Among the casualties were five members of the Maarouf family, including three children, who perished in an airstrike on a tent in al-Mawasi, near Khan Younis. This area had been designated as a "safe zone" for evacuees from the north. "They bombed us while we were sleeping on the ground," recounted Iman Abu Maarouf, the grieving mother. "We didn't do anything wrong. My children were killed, and the rest are in intensive care." Her husband, Zeyad Abu Maarouf, shared that they had relocated to al-Mawasi a month prior, following Israeli directives.

This surge in military activity coincides with renewed mediation efforts aimed at ending the hostilities and securing the release of hostages held by Hamas.
